Aad Weening

Info on the speaker:
Aad has been involved in distance selling (before: mail-order) practically all his working life. From 1966 until 1979 he worked at a professional secretariat agency offering legal and economic advice as well as lobbying services to some ten trade sectors. From 1979 he was based in Delft, the Netherlands where he managed the Dutch Mail Order Association. In this capacity he was in charge of the lobbying contacts with a number of Ministries, a.o. Economic Affairs, Justice, and Finances etc. Aad also was in charge for some ten years of the contract negotiations with Dutch (then) PTT, today TNT Post. He was close to the huge changes in the postal area in the Netherlands first, later through his European contact and network also on a European level.
In January 1993 he was appointed secretary general of the European Distance Selling Trade Association (EMOTA) based in Brussels. In this capacity he represented the distance selling sector towards the European institutions on legal and other issues, such as consumer protection, consumer credit, international contract law, and postal services as well as to international institutions, such as the Universal Postal Union, the World Trade Organisation, the OECD and others.
At the end of the nineties, early 2000 the contacts with Central and Eastern Europe were established and Aad spend a considerable time in the “new” countries, following from very close the rapid (economic) changes. Later close contacts followed with Russia, Ukraine, and others.
This enabled Aad to set up a network of contacts in the East which has been very useful in guiding companies to access the new developing markets.
Since January 2007 Aad has his own consultancy.
Because of his extensive knowledge both about the trade sector in all its aspects as about the functioning of the European institutions, Aad is regularly invited to participate as speaker and chairman at European and international conferences.
He is fluent in English, French, German and Dutch, both spoken and written and has a passive knowledge of some other languages, like Italian, Spanish.

The problems/challenges:
Challenging times are ahead: the further integration of online and mobile into traditional business, the possibilities in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, the emerging countries outside Europe (China, India, Latin America etc.).
Traditional means will stay to support the total distance selling effort: catalogues, mailings and fulfillment are as important as they always were.
Customer behavior is rapidly changing. Today’s consumer is well educated, uses the internet as an instrument to be informed about buying possibilities and the internet gives him a unique opportunity to compare prices, to chat about his experiences in for a with other consumers etc. He is more in control than ever before.
Companies are faced with a changing and volatile consumer. How to get his attention and retain him as customer?
